A Sharon man facing a date Monday with a Trumbull County grand jury has pleaded not guilty to charges he and two other local men robbed and beat a Howland man while ransacking his home.
Erik J. Splitstone, 24, of 225 Jefferson Ave., is charged with aggravated burglary, aggravated robbery and kidnapping for an Oct. 14 incident police called an invasion of Sergio Chavarria’s home and a brutal attack on the man.
Aiding Splitstone in the attack were Ronald Pickard, 21, of 1264 Hines Ave. and Justin M. Porterfield, 20, of 473 Sherman Ave., both Sharon, police said.
The three men broke into Chavarria’s home and stole a gun, cash, marijuana and cocaine, police said. They beat Chavarria and tied him up before slashing his face from his mouth to ear, police added.
The men wore ski masks and gloves in the attack, police said.
Pickard and Porterfield were also charged with felonious assault in addition to the same charges Splitstone faces.
Pickard pleaded guilty on April 25 to amended charges excluding aggravated robbery. He is free on bond, awaiting sentencing Aug. 21.
Porterfield pleaded not guilty and is in Trumbull County Jail awaiting his Aug., 25 trial before Judge W. Wyatt McKay.
Splitstone is also free on bond and a trial before Judge Andrew D. Logan begins Monday.
Charges against Splitstone in another alleged attack in South Pymatuning Township were held to court May 29 by District Judge William Fagley, Greenville.
Erin Biser, 23, said Splitstone attacked her April 14 while getting out of her car at her Birch Street home.
She said Splitstone, who faces an attempted homicide charge among 13 others, used a knife to cut a 2- to 3-inch gash in her forearm before he ran off.
Splitstone was also charged about a week after the hearing at Fagley’s for threatening two witnesses at the district justice’s office. One count of retaliation against a witness or victim was held to court, while a second was withdrawn and a third was dismissed.
Splitstone posted bond, avoiding jail time for both sets of Mercer County charges.
