A Sharon woman accused of stabbing a Farrell man and severing an artery in his arm Wednesday in her home was taken to the hospital for a mental health evaluation, Sharon police said.

Ladonna L. Pegues, 47, of 811 Ravine Place, was taken to the hospital at Sharon Regional Health System Wednesday afternoon and on Thursday police filed a warrant for her arrest on charges of aggravated assault, reckless endangerment and tampering with evidence, court documents said.

Police said Ms. Pegues stabbed and slashed a 51-year-old man who’d been sleeping on her couch.

Police declined to release his name and said he was taken to St. Elizabeth Health Center, Youngstown, for treatment of an arterial cut on his right wrist and puncture wounds on his left arm and between his shoulder blades.

The man was to have had surgery Thursday on his arm, police said. He received nerve damage and lost some feeling in his fingers, they said.

Police were called twice at about 12:25 p.m., once to the 800 block of Ravine for a report of yelling and glass breaking and then to 330 Quinby Street for a man with a cut who was badly bleeding, police said.

The man said he’d been asleep on Ms. Pegues’ couch and someone knocked on the front door. She got agitated and went to the kitchen and returned with a large steak knife, he told police.

As the man tried to get up, she started swinging the knife at him and he ran into the kitchen, police said. Ms. Pegues screamed at him and ran toward him with the knife.

When the man tried to run out the back door, Ms. Pegues “jabbed him” in the back and he put his left arm up to block the knife, police said.

After the incident, police took Ms. Pegues in for questioning and she made some statements that led police to admit her to the hospital for an evaluation, police said.

Police did not know when she would be arraigned on the charges, saying it depended on the outcome of the mental health evaluation.
