Fatal garage fire being probed

SHENANGO TOWNSHIP — One person died in an explosion and fire in a garage Saturday evening in Shenango Township, said Mercer County Coroner J. Bradley McGonigle III.

McGonigle said he could not say whether the deceased was male or female, or if anyone else was injured.

“We’re still in the preliminary stages of the investigation,” McGonigle said at about 8:15 p.m., about 2 1/2 hours after the blaze was reported.

McGonigle said he expected to have more information available today.

A state police fire marshal also was investigating the fire at 659 Bedford Road.

At the scene, a Shenango Township firefighter acknowledged only that they had been called to a “fully involved garage fire” but would not discuss whether anyone was injured and would not grant access to Fire Chief Bill Williams.

The garage had two bays and was detached from a home. The fire was  called in at 5:40 p.m., said Mercer County 911.
