Wanted man still at large

Ex-mat champ eluded police

SHARON — During wrestling season, Kyle R. Cheza’s name will appear from time to time on the honor roll of state wrestling champions. He won a state title in 1987 for Hickory High School.

Today, Cheza’s a wanted man, sought by Sharon police after an 11:30 p.m. Saturday incident in which he allegedly fought with, then pulled a gun on, a 37-year-old Sharon man in front of that man’s wife and two teenage children, police said.

Cheza struck the man in the head with a pistol after he was refused a beer, police said.

He had wandered into the family’s yard and “struck up a conversation” with the victim, police said.

He ran afterward and since then police have sought Cheza, 43, of 701 Spencer Ave., Sharon.

He faces charges of aggravated assault, being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm, firearms to be carried without a license, simple assault and terroristic threats, which were filed at District Justice Dennis M. Songer’s court.

On Monday, police thought Cheza was barricaded in his home and Sharon Police Chief Mike Menster said the Mercer County Critical Incident Response Team searched the house, but came up empty.

Neither Cheza nor any guns were found and Tuesday, Menster turned to the public for help.

“We consider him armed and dangerous,” Menster said.

Anyone who has information about where he is is asked to call Mercer County 911’s non-emergency line at 724-662-6110.
