WEST MIDDLESEX — A familiar face in Mercer County schools is at the helm of West Middlesex Area School District.

Retired Mercer schools superintendent Lawrence R. Connelly Jr., who also served as an interim superintendent at Farrell Area School District, was hired effective July 7 to replace Alan Baldarelli.

Baldarelli retired effective June 30. His retirement package was not divulged to board members, nor discussed by them, board members said.

Baldarelli did not attend the June 24 meeting and neither he nor solicitor James Nevant would provide details of the retirement agreement.

Midwestern Intermediate Unit IV, Grove City, provided the board with several names to fill the interim position.

School directors voted 6 to 2 to hire Connelly. Tracy Hemminger, Ryan T. Gelesky, Douglas Hazlett, Theodore W. Hennessy, Anita Booth and Ashley Rupert were in favor; Glen Allen Jr. and Troy Mild dissented; Jack Grandy was absent.

Mild had sought the appointment of high school Principal Kevin Briggs. Allen agreed but the other six disagreed.

Unit IV is assisting in the search for a new superindent and the board hopes to hire a permanent replacement before classes resume in the fall.

The next board meeting is set for 6 p.m. July 22 at Luther Low Elementary.
