- — Sprinkler leak floods local restaurant

HERMITAGE – Frigid weather put a Hermitage restaurant out of business temporarily by causing its sprinkler system to leak.

Golden Corral’s sprinkler sprung a leak about 2 a.m. Saturday, and the fire suppression system flooded the restaurant at 1025 N. Hermitage Road, Fire Chief Bob Goeltz said.

He ordered the restaurant closed until the system is repaired and the city’s health inspector can check the premises. That could be as early as today.

Goeltz said he has been advising commercial property owners to monitor their sprinkler systems which can be susceptible to freezing because of their location in the unheated space between the roofs and ceilings of buildings.

“They should remove a few ceiling tiles so heat from below can reach pipes for their sprinkler systems,” he said. “They may not like losing the heat, but the expense of that will probably be less than the cost of repairing the sprinkler system if it freezes.”
