GROVE CITY —
Two people are dead after an early-morning fire in Grove City. The fire at about 3:15 a.m. Monday apparently killed a man and a woman inside the house at 432 McConnell St., police said.
Jeff Badger, Grove City fire chief, said one of the bodies was found on the first floor of the two-story wood frame house and the other remains were found in the basement.
The bodies and dental records of residents listed at that address were taken to Erie for an autopsy and identification by forensic pathologist Dr. Eric Vey, Mercer County Coroner J. Bradley McGonigle said.
A state police fire marshal was at the scene Monday to begin the investigation into the cause of the fire that heavily damaged the house.
“It’s still standing but it’s pretty well destroyed,” Badger said.
The fire apparently started in the front of the house but he had no immediate information on its cause.
“It could have been any number of things,” Badger said. “I wouldn’t want to speculate on something like that.”
Firefighters from Pine and Springfield townships as well as Mercer, Sandy Lake and Jackson Center assisted Grove City firefighters.
Badger said no firefighters were injured from fighting the fire “but I have to make sure they’re all right” after helping in an emergency that caused deaths.
