Suspected shooter waives hearing

SHARON — District Judge Dennis M. Songer’s courtroom was packed for more than an hour at noon Wednesday with teenage girls from Sharon.

They were there because one of them, Shawnae Manning, 15, was shot in the arm July 1 at a party in a garage in the 800 block of Highland Road near Temple Beth Israel in Sharon.

One of Shawnae’s arms was in a cast supported by a sling.

The girls were there to testify about what happened that night, when at 12:38 a.m. police say Eliot G. Reed Jr., 16, who has addresses in Sharon and New Castle, got into a fight with another, as yet unidentified, teen.

Reed pulled out a handgun and fired several shots into the air and two shots into the crowd, one of which hit Shawnae.

The crowd scattered and two of Shawnae’s friends took her to the emergency room of Sharon Regional Health System a couple blocks away, where a crowd formed that caused another disturbance that was broken up by police.

Talking with each other before court went into session Wednesday, the girls talked about how they didn’t want Shawnae to end up like Le’Angelo Crumby Ford.

Le’Angelo, 17, was shot and killed Jan. 20 at a house party near Sharon High School.

The girls talked with each other about how some of their peers think guns are cool and don’t understand the consequences that comes with using them.

They didn’t have to testify Wednesday and were told they could go at about 12:30 p.m., when Reed waived his right to a preliminary hearing on charges including attempted homicide, two counts of aggravated assault, firearms to be carried without a license and reckless endangering.

He’ll face those charges as an adult in Mercer County Common Pleas Court, Songer told him.

The judge agreed to reduce Reed’s bail from $250,000 to $100,000 before returning him to Mercer County Jail.
