SHENANGO VALLEY —
A man housed in Mercer County Jail accused of sexually assaulting a minor faces new charges of child rape against a 5-year-old.
Mercer County detectives determined there was enough evidence against Calvin Winchell, 35, of 479 B St., Sharon, to charge him with child rape, aggravated indecent assault of a child and corruption of a minor, police said.
Winchell, who said he likes to be called Samantha or Sammy, was cleaning a home in the 800 block of Spearman Ave., Sharon between February 2012 and November 2012, when he was at times left alone with the 5-year-old he is accused of raping, authorities said.
After a school guidance counselor reported an alleged assault on a student to authorities, Children and Youth Services interviewed the victim and the district attorney’s office filed a complaint in district court, detectives said.
Winchell has been in jail since June when he was accused of sexually assaulting a 12-year-old girl from his West Hill neighborhood.
According to police, he lured the girl to his home by inviting her to bake cookies with him, then talked her into taking a bath while he showed her a pornographic picture.
In September, Winchell had more charges added to the list for alleged intimidation of a victim and witness and retaliation through another inmate between July 1 and 7.
Police said the inmate told them Winchell offered him money and a gun to beat up the victim, or put her in a manhole with only bread and water until she was persuaded.
The inmate said Winchell also asked him to beat up a witness and inject her with a fatal dose of heroin, and to torch the home of another witness, police said.
Winchell denied the accusations.
He also has charges out of Sharpsville for corruption of minors in a fourth case.
He was arraigned in front of District Judge Dennis Songer Monday for the current charges and taken back to jail on $50,000 straight bond. A preliminary hearing is set for Nov. 13.
