PYMATUNING TOWNSHIP — A New Castle man was killed Monday afternoon while working on a 10,000-gallon fuel oil tank that exploded and caught fire, Transfer Fire Chief Phil Steele said.

Deputy Coroner John Libonati would not release the name of the man, who was reportedly in his 30s, until an autopsy is complete, which he said will be sometime today.

The tank was outside Brownie’s Oil Co., owned by Reed Oil, at Industrial Park Road and Route 18, close to Crestview Drive.

“It’s an industrial accident with a fatality,” Steele said, which means that OSHA must be notified of the incident.

Since the explosion happened outside, Pymatuning Township police will be investigating the cause.

“I could just hear the fire everywhere,” Crestview Drive resident Lynne Holiga said.

The explosion happened at about 5:30 p.m., she said.

Steele said he did not know the cause of the fire but knows that it was not intentional.

Transfer and Clark firefighters and Pymatuning Township and Greenville-West Salem Township police responded.
