Main Street hardware store destroyed in fire

SANDY LAKE — One Sandy Lake business was destroyed and another damaged in a fire Wednesday afternoon.

Firefighters from 10 departments in Mercer, Venango and Crawford counties spent the afternoon and early evening fighting a blaze that heavily damaged Ebbert’s Hardware at 3263 S. Main St., one of the oldest buildings in town.

An adjacent flower shop was damaged by smoke in the fire, which was reported at 1:36 p.m., according to a 911 supervisor.

The fire kept volunteers busy into Wednesday evening. As of 6 p.m., they were still at the scene and unavailable for comment.

Sandy Lake’s volunteers were assisted by firefighters from Stoneboro, Grove City, East End in Mercer, Sheakleyville, Pine Township, Jackson Center, Polk, Utica and Cochranton, according to 911.

The cause and extent of damage were unclear Wednesday night.

State Route 173, which is Main Street in Sandy Lake, was closed Thursday afternoon and evening because of the fire. It was expected to reopen by 8:30 p.m.
