Sharpsville Area School Board members on Wednesday voted unanimously to pass their 2013-14 budget of $15 million by pledging to tap into their savings-reserve account for the $822,150 deficit, leaving it with a balance of about $1.2 million.
Property taxes in Sharpsville, Clark and South Pymatuning Township will remain at 68.75 mills.
“We discussed raising taxes one mill for capital improvements; our buildings need attention,” Superintendent Mark Ferrara said. “We decided to put it off for another year and watch cautiously over the next year.”
One mill raises about $65,000 for the school district.
The state shortfalls have been felt in Sharpsville schools as well as neighboring districts, according to Ferrara.
“I think it’s important to note that 60 percent of our revenue comes from the state.” Ferrara said. “If they cut back, we feel it.”
Instead of a wage freeze or furlough at this time, the board voted to hire four teachers and a custodian.
Ferrara said the new employees hired were to replace those who retired or quit.
“We don’t have a teachers’ contract,” Ferrara said. “We have agreed to continue negotiating beyond June 30.”
Negotiations with administrative staff allowed for a 3.17 percent increase in the salaries of these 10 employees:
Chris Smith, special education supervisor, to $72,497;
Kent Williams, instructional technology director to $81,041;
Rhonda Baker, administrative assistant to the central office, to $38,132;
Darlene Cheney, administrative assistant to the superintendent, to $38,132;
Barbara Dunlap, administrative assistant to the senior business manager, to $42,211;
Edwin Getway, maintenance supervisor, to $50,546;
Wade Hoagland, director of facilities, to $60,023;
Krystal Miller, administrative assistant to the instructional technology coordinator, to $37,306;
Sandra Melius, head cook, to $108.29 per day;
Jaime Roberts, board secretary, to $6,770;
