SHARPSVILLE — Standing in the empty showroom of his car dealership, which  for decades has been situated in the heart of Sharpsville on Main Street, Jim Black reminisced about the family business that saw its last day as a Chevrolet dealership on Tuesday.

Black said the business closed down its entire operation. He explained that the demands from the manufacturer and government regulations are more than a small business can handle.

“We would have to make a major capital investment to continue the business at the same level,” Black said Wednesday.

Even so, Black said he had “nothing bad to say about the ‘bowtie,’ ” referencing the Chevy logo.

Right now, there is not a business replacing Jason Black Chevrolet yet. If the opportunity comes their way, Black said the family would consider selling the building.

“Whatever we do will be for the betterment of Sharpsville,” said Jason Black, Jim’s son and co-owner. “It will have to bring employment opportunities and tax revenue.”

According to Ken Robertson, Borough Manager of Sharpsville, the car dealership will be missed by many.

“They’ve been a long time anchor at the corner of Walnut and Main, a good servicing business here in Sharpsville and the entire valley,” Robertson said.

Jim Black said his family decided to get out of the business completely, and he would retire with dignity.

He has worked in the car business at that corner for 44 years, the last 11 as a co-owner with his son.

“I’m sad, it’s your whole life,” Jim said.

He also said that he has no immediate plans for retirement.

“By habit he’s going to come to Sharpsville every day and put the key in the lock until the building’s not here,” Jason joked.

Both father and son said they were very thankful to loyal customers from all over the Shenango Valley.

“We had a lot of great employees and a lot of great customers and we thank all of them,” Jason said.
