Man admits having illegal gun

SHARON — A Sharon man pleaded guilty Monday to a charge of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon stemming from an Oct. 13 gun battle in which he and another man were injured by bullets.

Ralph Samuels, 50, of 1325 George St., Sharon, faces a sentence of up to 10 years when he learns his fate Oct. 10. He is on home detention until then.

Samuels is not allowed to possess a firearm because of a 2000 conviction of two counts of corruption of a minor in Hocking County, Ohio, the indictment said. Also as a result of that conviction, Samuels registers as a sex offender.

Prosecutors said Samuels was in a Brookfield bar in the early morning hours of Oct. 13 when a fight broke out between Deandre Chambers and Corey Odem.

Samuels drove to Chambers’ home in the 500 block of Emerson Avenue, Farrell, with Chambers and Raymond Wilson and noticed two men waiting for them at the top of the street, prosecutors said.

Chambers gave Samuels a Spanish-made Firestorm .45-caliber pistol and Samuels waited outside, prosecutors said.

Samuels and the two men fired at each other, with Samuels firing about five rounds, prosecutors said. One of the rounds from the Firestorm hit Daniel L. Odem Jr. in the left arm, while one of the three or four rounds Odem fired hit Samuels in the wrist, prosecutors said.

A house was hit three times, Southwest Mercer County Regional police said.

Samuels gave the Firestorm to a friend, who threw it and another gun onto a roof, where police recovered it, prosecutors said. Samuels’ DNA was found on the Firestorm, prosecutors said.

No one else has been charged in connection with gun battle.
