MERCER — The name of the driver killed Sunday on Interstate 79 in Findley Township has been released.
James D. Fanning, Jr., 52, of Zelienople, was identified after a forensic dental examination conducted by the Mercer County Coroner’s office Tuesday.
The accident happened at 7:06 p.m. as Fanning was traveling at a high speed south on Interstate 79 the SUV rear-ended a PennDOT truck in the passing lane, state police said.
Upon impact, the SUV spun and caught fire, said state police, who were assisted by East End Volunteer Fire Department of Mercer.
Cris Loutzenhiser, Mercer County deputy coroner, who pronounced Fanning dead at the scene, said Fanning was the only passenger in the SUV. The PennDOT truck driver was not hurt.
