SPRINGFIELD TOWNSHIP —
A 15-year-old boy was killed and a 37-year-old woman was hurt when they were hit by a truck at 11:45 p.m. Thursday while they were fishing at a Springfield Township farm pond, state police said.
The boy, Austin J. Rife of Dayton, Ohio, was pronounced dead at 12:40 a.m. Friday in Grove City Medical Center, Pine Township. He died of head and chest wounds, according to a news release by Mercer County Coroner J. Bradley McGonigle, who referred additional questions to state police.
He was fishing with Stephani L. Rife, 37, of Kettering, Ohio, who was treated at the hospital for what police described as moderate injuries.
They were fishing at a farm pond about 240 feet from Old Ash Road when they were hit by a truck driven by a New Castle woman, police said.
She was driving south on the road and went off the left side into a pasture, traveling 240 feet before she struck the Rifes, police said.
Her name isn’t being published because she has not been charged, according to online court documents.
Police said she was arrested for drunken driving and that additional charges are pending.
A state police spokesman said no further information was available Saturday.
