SHENANGO TOWNSHIP —
A 44-year-old Sharon man was killed Saturday afternoon when the van he was driving crashed along Interstate 80 in Shenango Township, police said.
Karl Magee and his passenger, Darren G. Millhoff, 35, also of Sharon, neither of whom were wearing seatbelts, were both thrown from the 2003 Town and Country van when Magee attempted to pass a truck at 3:25 p.m. while traveling west in the left-hand lane, police said.
Magee drifted into the right-hand lane and struck the rear tire of the truck beside him, steered sharply left, and then careened off the roadway, down an embankment and began to roll numerous times, police said.
The van traveled up the opposite side of the median and both men were thrown out the right-side door. The van continued across the eastbound lanes of the interstate and landed on the right berm, facing northeast, police said.
The truck involved did not stop, police said.
Magee was pronounced dead at the scene and Millhoff was taken to St. Elizabeth Hospital, Youngstown, police said.
