SHARON — Police confirmed that two people were shot Tuesday night in the 200 block of Mesabi Street, Sharon.

“I don’t believe there were any life threatening injuries,” said police Chief Mike Menster.

Residents of the Mercer County Housing Authority apartment complex were hoping to get back into their homes, although they were shaken by the incident.

“People just have no regard for human life,” one woman said. “Thank God there were no babies out here.”

Menster said one victim was taken to the emergency room of Sharon Regional Health System, and the other was rushed to St. Elizabeth Health Center, Youngstown.

Police radio traffic at 8:04 p.m. indicated that one person was shot in the mouth and the other in the back, but Menster would not comment.

Although it was reported to Mercer County 911 dispatchers that possible suspects sped off and police were chasing the car, Menster could not confirm the information.

“Nobody was apprehended,” Menster said at about 9 p.m., adding that it was too soon to know exactly what happened.

As a Sharon fire engine shone its floodlights at the apartment complex and police crime tape was rolled out, evidence was gathered and markers speckled the sidewalks and lawns.

It was heard over police radio that “magazine racks” were found, indicating semi-automatic weapons may have been used in the shooting.
