Sorry kids, rumors of school being delayed by another week have been greatly exaggerated.
“School will start on time,” Michael Calla, acting superintendent of Sharon schools, said Monday.
The new Case Avenue Elementary School was granted an occupancy permit allowing for the long-awaited opening of the first day of classes on September 3.
“Teachers went back Thursday,” Calla said.
A public dedication and open house is scheduled Sept. 18 at Case Avenue.
The school board on Monday approved spending almost $3,000 to refeed the signal lights on East State Street in front of the Case Avenue school and for a fire alarm review to satisfy the occupancy permit.
The board is planning further construction on the site, including more parking and green space.
To make up for lost parking swallowed up by the new school, the district has plans to open up 50 new spaces across from the high school on Forker Boulevard.
The fenced-in, L-shaped lot next to 84 Forker Blvd. will be converted into parking for school events, Calla said.
The district also plans on leveling the house and pine tree on the other side of that space behind Shenango Valley Meats. Calla said the board has not decided if this will be for parking or green space.
That project will be reimbursed 80 percent by the state.
“It was a deal too good to pass up,” Calla said.
Another possible green space may or may not be popping up in place of the old Ziebart building on the corner of East State Street and Forker.
The board made an agreement with AGX, Inc., Wexford, for predemolition asbestos material inspection of the building at 47 Forker. The cost is $1,400 to conduct the survey and prepare the report summarizing the findings. If additional monitoring services are needed, the cost is at a rate of $400 per day.
“We’ll be spending money to renovate or tear down the building,” Calla said. “It’s just the matter of how much.”
He said the board needs to further discuss their concerns on the structural soundness of the building.
