Crash kills woman, injures driver

DELAWARE TOWNSHIP — A Fredonia-area woman was killed and a man critically injured when the car they were in hit a transformer pole at 8:25 a.m. Sunday in Delaware Township, state police said.

Chandra N. Kodali, 32, was pronounced dead at 9:45 a.m. at the scene by Mercer County Deputy Coroner John Libonati, police said.

Jeffrey J. Benninghoff, 29, of Fredonia, was listed in critical condition Sunday afternoon at St. Elizabeth Health Center in Youngstown, a hospital spokeswoman said. Police called his injuries life-threatening.

Benninghoff was driving westbound on Delaware Road approaching Folk Road when he swerved left to avoid a bicyclist who was traveling westbound on the north berm, police said.

Benninghoff lost control and his 1988 Cadillac and it spun clockwise, and then counterclockwise, hitting the pole broadside on the passenger side, police said.

Both occupants were pinned inside the car, police said.

Fredonia, Hempfield, East End from Mercer and Sheakleyville volunteer firefighters assisted, police said.

Benninghoff was flown to St. E’s.
