Hearing to focus on distribution of retirement pay for divorced military retirees

SLIPPERY ROCK — The state House Democratic Committee is holding a public hearing today (Oct. 28) at Slippery Rock University to look at legislation to provide judicial oversight in determining how military retirement pay should be distributed for divorced military retirees.

The hearing is open to the public and it will be held from 3 to 5 p.m. in Ballroom A of the Robert M. Smith Student Center.

Committee Chairman is State Rep. Mike Sturla, D-Lancaster, and the hearing was requested by State Rep. Jaret Gibbons, D-Beaver, Butler and Lawrence counties, who will serve as co-chair during the hearing.

The hearing will look at Gibbons’ legislation, House Bill 1192, that would provide judicial discretion when determining how a military retiree’s retirement pay, other than pension, should be distributed in the case of a divorce.

Currently, military retirement pay is not excluded as marital property and regardless of the length of marriage or military service is often subject to division.

Those expected to speak during the hearing include: Larry White, national director of USFSPA Liberation Support Group; retired service men and women; concerned citizens; and Dale Hill, ULSG Pennsylvania representative.
