The District 10 Class AA football playoff game scheduled Saturday afternoon will be played Monday night, according to an email statement Saturday afternoon by Sharon athletic director Paul Torr.
The game against Girard is rescheduled for 7 p.m. Monday, at Veterans Memorial Stadium in Erie “ ... in honor of those who cannot play,” head coach Jim Wildman said Saturday afternoon.
Sharon officials said the Swartz, Gill and Osmon families were “adamant” that the team play the game.
“We deferred to the families. We didn’t want to cause further grief,” Superintendent Michael Calla said. “They were the determining factor.”
Torr had talked with school, district and Girard officials about the team’s options before agreeing to the Monday game.
Wildman said he and coaches went to St. Elizabeth Health Center in Youngstown, where injured twins Greg and Craig Osmon are patients, then returned to meet with the team’s remaining seniors as well as underclassmen team members.
“Enthusiastically, they were all in ... the response has been extremely positive,” Wildman said. “No one’s written a chapter on how to handle a situation like this. I don’t claim to be a politician. But the school’s administration, the board, the community, the booster club, the parents, the sense of support they’ve given has just been phenomenal! And the concensus among the coaches and players is, “We owe them something, and this is our chance.
