Barbara M. Cowan

Former Bell operator was active in Zion’s church

- — Barbara M. Cowan, White Cliff Health and Rehabilitation Center, Hempfield Township, formerly of 124 East Ave., Greenville, passed away following a brief illness, at 2:57 p.m. Saturday (12-21-13) in UPMC Horizon, Greenville. She was 83.

She was born in Greenville, on March 21, 1930, to the late Robert and Mabel (Ramsey) McConnell.

Barbara was a 1948 graduate of the former Penn High School, Greenville.

She was an operator at the former Bell Telephone Co. in Greenville, a homemaker, and also worked at White Cliff Nursing Home as a nurse’s aide.

She was a member of Zion’s Reformed United Church of Christ, Greenville. She loved her church where she served as a deacon and was a very active member.

She loved spending time with her family and friends. She enjoyed “just visiting,” going on bus trips, and traveling to places like Las Vegas and Atlantic City, N.J.

Barbara is survived by: her husband at home, Wesley G. Cowan. They were married Feb. 14, 1950.

Also surviving are: her son, Wesley D. Cowan, Akron; her daughter, Terry Conti and her husband, Patrick, Monroeville; three grandchildren, Jamie Pasqurnelli and her husband, Justin “JP”, Pittsburgh; Ryan Gilfoyle of Lebanon, Pa.; and Erin Gilfoyle, Monroeville; and her sister, Suzanne Smith and her husband, Robert, Greenville.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by: two sisters, Mary Lou Dodds and Kathryn Hittle; and two brothers, Robert McConnell and John McConnell.
