John A. Joanou

Farrell High grad worked 37 years at Sharon Steel

- — Mr. Joanou was born July 8, 1926, in Rhodes, Greece, a son of Alex and Olga Nicholaou Joanou.

John came to the United States when he was 5 months old and was a 1944 graduate of Farrell High School.

Following his graduation, he became a licensed projectionist and managed several local movie theaters and drive-ins. In 1948, he began working at the former Sharon Steel Corp.’s Farrell plant where he would work for more than 37 years before his retirement in 1986 as a master machinist. During his term of employment, he served on the company’s safety committee and was a shop steward.

Mr. Joanou was a member of Free and Accepted Masons Hebron Lodge 389 in West Middlesex and was a former officer of the G.A.P.A. (Greek American Progressive Association) in Farrell.

During his free time, he enjoyed fishing, hunting and taking care of his family and home.

John leaves behind: his devoted wife of more than 60 years, the former Eva Faklis, whom he married June 6, 1953; his daughter, Lori Jean Chirakos and her husband Sam, and granddaughters, Alexandra E. Chirakos and Anastasia E. Chirakos, all Dublin, Ohio; his brother, Marko Joanow and his wife Fannie, Hermitage; a sister-in-law, Sylvia Joanow, Tarpon Springs, Fla.; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Manuel Joanow.

Interment: Arch Angel Michael Cemetery, Campbell, Ohio.
