Shirley Jean Zirwas

Ex-Mercer resident lived in Ohio, wintered in Fla.

- — Mrs. Zirwas was born Feb. 10, 1943, in Heidelberg, Pa., to Baldo and Hazel Iorio.

She married Thomas Zirwas on Jan. 19, 1963, and they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary this past January.  Her husband, Tom, survives her as well as her children, Marsha, wife of Michael Wiesenbach, Johnstown, Pa.; Michael, husband of Brenda, Torrey, Utah; and Matthew, husband of Jill, Columbus, Ohio.

In addition, she had four grandchildren she adored, Seth Wiesenbach, a sophomore at Drexel University; Ben Wiesenbach, a junior at Westmont High in Johnstown; and Margaret and Susannah Zirwas, elementary school students at Cassingham Elementary in Bexley, Ohio.

Shirley is also survived by her brother, Ron, husband of Steffanie, Pittsburgh, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Shirley and Tom raised their children in western Pennsylvania and later moved to Columbus. She and Tom were snowbirds in their later years and had a home in Venice, Fla., where they enjoyed bicycling and walking on the beach collecting sharks’ teeth.

While living in Columbus, Shirley enjoyed golfing, playing cards and traveling with her friends.

She leaves behind many friends who have fond memories of her.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial contributions be made in memory of Shirley to Mount Carmel Foundation at 6150 E. Broad St., Columbus, OH 43213.

Her family would like to thank all of those who were involved in her care, especially her friend, Bev Wood, Mount Carmel Hospice and Home Instead Nursing.

Service: Memorial Mass at 1 p.m. Monday (11-25-13) in Holy Child Parish, 212 Station St., Bridgeville, PA 15017, with the Rev. Robert Neyer as celebrant. Please visit to share memories or extend condolences.
