John C. Hoye

Farmer served church, was Wilmington school director


- — John C. Hoye of Georgetown Road, Volant, died Wednesday morning, March 5, 2014, in Jameson Care Center, New Castle. He was 97.

A lifetime resident of Lawrence County, Mr. Hoye was born Feb. 23, 1917, to Norman and Rachel Hughes Hoye.

He was a graduate of Union High School, New Castle, class of 1936.

John was a farmer by profession and loved his contact with friends, neighbors, business partners, family and members of the many organizations he supported.

John believed in a strong education system and was a longtime member of the Wilmington Area School Board beginning in the 1950s when the new Lawrence County school districts were being formed.

As a longtime member of Plain Grove Presbyterian Church,  Mr. Hoye was a trustee, elder and Sunday school teacher during his 68 years since moving to Plain Grove.

He was president of the Lawrence County Fair when the current property was purchased and attended every fair, with his family exhibiting at each one.

John was a 4-H leader for many years in the 1950s and 1960s and was a member of Lawrence County Extension Board, Lawrence County Conservation Board, Plain Grove and Lawrence County granges and the FmHA (Farmers Home Administration) committee.

He raised and milked Jersey cattle from 1940 and was a member of all the cattle organizations for the breed including local, state and national.

His wife, the former Blanche Gardner, whom he married May 2, 1940, passed away Sept. 13, 2003.

He is survived by: two sons and a daughter, Clarence Hoye and his wife Margie, Williamsfield, Ohio; Lois and her husband John McConnell, Volant; and Donald Hoye and his wife Edy, New Wilmington; grandchildren, Gregory Hoye, Kinsman; Pamela McConnell, Volant; Roberta and her husband Ryan Baney, Wampum, Pa.; Joy and her husband Sammy Staples, Hermitage; Matthew Hoye and his wife Lesley, McMurray, Pa.; and Megan and her husband Scott Liesinger, Mechanicsville, Va.; and a brother, Robert Hoye and his wife Vivian, New Wilmington.

He also is survived by 11 great-grandchildren.

Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, William and Homer Hoye; sister, Eleanor Rowland; granddaughter, Deborah Hoye; and grandson, Stephen Hoye.

The family would like to offer special thanks for the efforts and care for John by the staff at Jameson Care while he was a resident at the facility.

Service: Funeral service at 11 a.m. Saturday in the church with the Rev. Dr. Stanley Keehlwetter officiating.

Interment: South Plain Grove (Township) Cemetery, Lawrence County.
