Eatery co-owner, Jameson retiree worked at Penney’s

- — Colleen Grossman of Hermitage passed away peacefully at 7:10 p.m. Tuesday (3-4-14) surrounded by family in her daughter’s residence after a three-month illness. She was 81.

Mrs. Grossman was born March 29, 1932, in Pana, Ill., the ninth child of 10 born to Lawrence and Cecelia Grimmer Munie.

She graduated from Pana High School.

In her early years, Colleen worked for Illinois Power Co., Decatur. She later moved to Pennsylvania and gained employment with J.C. Penney’s in the Shenango Valley Mall, Hermitage, where she worked as a sales associate.

Colleen and her husband purchased a small restaurant in Ellwood City that they renamed Grossman’s Restaurant, a business they would own and operate for 17 years.

She retired in 2007 at the age of 74 from the dietary department of Jameson Health System, New Castle.

She was a member of Church of Notre Dame, Hermitage.

Mrs. Grossman was a familiar face at the Shenango Valley Senior Center, Hermitage, where she enjoyed social activities and made many friends.

She was a voracious reader who loved spending time with her children and grandchildren; she especially enjoyed taking them to Kraynak’s Christmas Lane and attending their holiday concerts and programs throughout the years.

Her husband, Robert E. Grossman, whom she married March 26, 1951, passed away Feb. 18 of this year.

She is survived by: her five children, Michelle Judy, Youngstown; Jean Marie and her husband Daniel Lamb, Austintown, Ohio; Melissa and her husband Robert Thomas, Hermitage; Brian and his wife Mary Grossman, Tallmadge, Ohio; and Steven and his wife Lauren Grossman, Beaver, Pa.; 13 grandchildren, Cathy, Tammy, Jennifer, Danielle, Randi, Kimberly, Jessica, Lauren, Bobby, Megan, Conlan, Ben and Sam; and nine great-grandchildren.

Colleen also leaves two sisters, Mary Cunningham, Decatur; and Irene Plourde, Ontario, Canada; and a brother, Robert Munie, Battle Creek, Mich.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, three sisters and three brothers.

Service: Mass of Christian burial at 11:30 a.m. Friday (3-7-14) in Church of Notre Dame, 2325 Highland Road, Hermitage, with the Rev. Jeffery J. Noble, pastor, as celebrant. There will be no procession to the church; everyone is asked to go directly to the church the morning of the Mass.

Interment: Castleview Memorial Park, New Castle.
