Mary Joan Girlinghouse Egan

Mercer-area resident was retired SRU professor


- — Mary Joan Girlinghouse Egan, a resident since 1993 of 168 Latonka Drive, Jackson Township (Mercer), passed away at 12:50 p.m. Tuesday, March 4, 2014, in The Overlook nursing home, New Wilmington. She was 81.

Mrs. Egan was born June 23, 1932, in Tuscaloosa, Ala., to Ernest Talmade Girlinghouse and Vida Louise McGee Girlinghouse.

She earned a bachelor of arts degree from the University of Alabama, and a master’s of arts and doctorate in philosophy from The Catholic University of America, Washington, D.C.

Mrs. Egan retired in 1967 as an associate professor of English from Slippery Rock University.

She was of the Roman Catholic faith.

Her husband, Joseph J. Egan, whom she married June 15, 1974, died Oct. 2, 2010.

Surviving are a stepdaughter, Michelle Juliana Egan, Guttenberg, N.J.; and a niece, Elizabeth B. Bernard, Orinda, Calif.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents.

Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice.

Service: Private service at the convenience of family will be held in CUNNINGHAM FUNERAL HOME Inc., 144 S. Pitt St., Mercer, with the Rev. James J. Kennelley, pastor of Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, Mercer, officiating.

Interment: Prairie Cemetery, Harrisville.
