Adam Daniel ‘Dan’ Root

Ohio airport backer owned, worked in food business

---- — A funeral service will be held Saturday for Adam Daniel “Dan” Root of Hermitage. He died peacefully Tuesday evening, April 16, 2013, in his home. He was 85.

Mr. Root was born April 12, 1928, in West Middlesex to Chester Thomas and Almira Estella Shrawder Root.

Dan began his career as a meat cutter for Loblaw’s and later worked, until 1966, as a supervisor for Golden Dawn Foods, both in the Shenango Valley.

In 1966, he bought and operated D&D Plaza Foods in Middlefield, Ohio, selling the business in 1974.

He was recognized in 2003 for his generosity to the Geauga County Airport as a “founding father.”

He enjoyed hunting and fishing with his son, Rich.

He will be remembered for his generosity and many acts of kindness to others.

He is survived by his loving and caring wife of 31 years, Reta Bucher Root; a daughter, Barbara and her husband Warren Kandel, Louisville, Ohio; three sons, Richard Root and his wife Pam, Middlefield, Ohio; Robert Miller and his wife Martie, Naples, Fla.; and Rodney L. Miller and his companion Kathy Heinlin, Masury; four sisters, Mary Patton, Pulaski; and Daisy and her husband Robert Withers; Karen and her husband Bob Wellhausen; and Molly Wise, all New Castle; three brothers, Owen Root, Sharon; Richard Root, California; and James Wise, New Castle; 11 grandchildren, Lisa and her husband Tom Penner; Sherry and her husband Sean Johnson; Julie and her husband Matt Piper; Nathan and his wife Kara Root; Christina and her husband Ryan Martin; Kyle Root and Bryan Root; Cherise Miller, Tiffanie Miller, Mathew Miller and Sean Miller; and 15 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Richard L. Miller; two sisters, Beverly Powell and Welwynn Sipe; and two brothers, Thomas Root and Arnum Root.

The family would like to thank Heartland Hospice and especially Amy and Mary for their compassionate care and tireless help.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Heartland Hospice, 3871 E. State St., Hermitage, PA 16148.
