Catherine Detelich Lopuh

St. Anthony’s member celebrated traditions

---- — Catherine Detelich Lopuh of Hermitage passed away at 7:55 p.m. Tuesday, April 23, 2013, in her home. She had been in declining health for the last two years, however, she continued to rally and surprise everyone with her strength and determination. She was 93 years old.

Mrs. Lopuh was born Oct. 6, 1919, in Sharon, as a daughter of Jacob and Dora Slunisky Detelich.

She resided in the Shenango Valley her entire life and attended Hermitage schools.

Her parents preceded her in death, as did her beloved husband Phillip, whom she married March 12, 1949. He died May 9, 1993. Her brothers, Frank, Jack and Rudy, as well as her precious sister, Annie, are also deceased.

Katie worked for 10 years at the former Sharon Transformer Division of Westinghouse Electric Corp. During World War II, she was a welder and truck driver.

After her marriage to Phillip, she was a homemaker and helped on her family farm, raising poultry of all kinds. Her gardens were quite fruitful and beautiful to behold.

Katie was a member of St. Anthony’s Church of Sharon and the Croatian Fraternal Union. She celebrated her Croatian heritage in many ways. Most notably, her strudels, nut torte and noodles were famous to all who loved her.

She especially loved spending time with her family. For many years, her parents, siblings and cousins lived side by side. They loved to have lamb roasts, as well as pig roasts, and celebrated their traditions and family by spending many hours laughing together.

Katie’s joy was in her children and grandchildren.

She is survived by her children, Melanie Gregory and her husband Richard “Rich,” Brookfield; and Phillip E. Lopuh and his wife Sandra “Sandy,” Mercer. She will be remembered for her devotion to all of us.

For 13 years, Katie and Phillip baby-sat for her grandchildren in Mercer. She and her husband arrived with strawberries and chocolate chip cookies and armed with bits of wisdom. Her grandchildren, Michalee Christy and her husband Aaron, Mercer; Carrie Thompson and her husband Ben, Shippenville, Pa.; and Becky Lopuh, Seneca, Venango County, will forever be blessed by her love. She also contributed greatly to the lives of her other grandchildren, Eric Gregory and his wife Kelly, Columbus, Ohio; Chrissy Brest and her husband Kurt, Tampa, Fla.; and Tracy Lipscomb and her husband Mike, Fort Myers, Fla.

She enjoyed all the many times they visited together.

She also leaves six great-grandchildren, who will remember her love and refrigerator full of chocolate bars. The children are Caleb and Mason Thompson, Abby and Andrew Christy, Kyle Brest and Ty Lipscomb.

Katie will forever leave a gap in the family circle. However, her ability to welcome all will be carried on by those who celebrate her life and mourn her death.
