Marion Nelson ‘Lamp’ Lampkins Jr.

Air Force veteran worked as corrections officer

---- — A funeral service will be held Saturday for Marion Nelson “Lamp” Lampkins Jr. of 529 Baldwin Ave., Sharon. He went home to glory at 8:35 a.m. Monday, May 20, 2013, after an extended illness. He was 51.

Mr. Lampkins was born Aug. 20, 1961, in Sharon to Marion Nelson Lampkins Sr. and Elizabeth Johnson Lampkins.

Marion attended Sharon School District until his freshman year in high school and graduated from West Middlesex High School in 1979, where he was active in football, baseball and basketball.

Upon graduation, he worked at the former Sharon Steel Corp.’s Farrell plant for three years before entering the U.S. Air Force, where he served as a sergeant with the U.S. Air Force police for 10 years.

With tours of duty in Italy, Saudi Arabia and locations stateside, Marion proudly served his country during Operation Desert Storm 1991. He was also an Air Force Honor Guard.

Marion retired from the military in 1992 and settled in Merced, Calif., where he was employed for 13 years as head of security with E&J Gallo Wineries in Modesto.

In 2005, Marion relocated back to the Shenango Valley with his wife of 22 years and their three children. He was employed as a sergeant for the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania Women’s State Correctional Facility in Cambridge Springs, where he was also an honor guard.

He was member of Second Baptist Church, Sharpsville.

In his leisure time, Marion would enjoy a front row seat at his children’s numerous sporting events. He inherited his father’s penchant for “fixin’ stuff” and would regularly be seen doing just that on his days off. He was an avid cook and made a “mean” rack of ribs. He was an avid Cleveland Browns fan.

He leaves to cherish his memory, his wife, Kimberly Diane, Sharon, formerly of Merced; a daughter, Kaela Elizabeth, 22; and sons, Marion Nelson III, 20; and Raymond James, 11; his mother, Elizabeth Lampkins, West Middlesex; sisters, Kim Lampkins-Atkinson, New Kensington, Pa.; and Susan Lampkins-Hanson, South Euclid, Ohio; a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews and friends; and his dear friend, Brian Thompson, Mercer, with whom he grew up together like brothers.

He was preceded in death by his father, Marion Nelson Lampkins Sr.
