Carroll E. ‘Jack’ Clary

WWII veteran was retired hospital administrator

---- — Carroll E. “Jack” Clary, Hermitage, formerly of Brookfield, passed away at 9:45 a.m. Friday, May 24, 2013, in John XXIII Home, Hermitage, after a brief illness. He was 93.

Mr. Clary was born Feb. 9, 1920, in St. George, Kan., to Thomas D. and Cora E. Conkwright Clary.

Jack received his bachelor of science degree in business administration from Kansas State University in 1950 and his master’s degree in hospital administration in 1958 from the Medical College of Virginia, Richmond.

He was administrator and chief executive officer of hospitals in St. Clemens, Mich.; Erie; and San Diego; and retired in 1984 after serving 21 years as administrator of the former Shenango Valley Osteopathic Hospital, now UPMC Horizon, Farrell.

A U.S. Army Air Force veteran, Mr. Clary served as a sergeant during World War II, from 1942 to 1946.

He was president and a Life Fellow of the College of Osteopathic Health Care Executives and was a Fellow in the American College of Hospital Administrators. He also belonged to the Hospital Association of Pennsylvania.

For many years, Jack served as commander and was an active member of the Pymatuning Power Squadron.

His wife, the former Martha G. Trenchard, whom he married Oct. 1, 1943, survives in Hermitage.

Also surviving are: a son, James T. Clary and his wife Debra, Warren, Ohio.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Thomas D. Clary II; a sister, Etta V. Hofman; and two brothers, Thomas Eldon Clary and Donald S. Clary.
