Helen M. Nelson Redic

Bethany Presbyterian member loved flowers

- — Mrs. Redic was born in Waverly, W.Va., on Oct. 30, 1916 to Joseph Frederick Nelson and Ethel Sidley Nelson.

She married DeAlton M. “Pete” Redic on Dec. 11, 1945. They got married upon his return after serving 4 1/2, years in WWII. They were married 47 years. He died Nov. 1, 1992.

Helen was a 50-plus member of Bethany Presbyterian Church where she was active in Sunday school and choir. She was a charter member of Kappa Chi Sunday School class and Windsor bell choir.

She was also a representative from the church to the Shenango Home in New Wilmington and St. Paul Homes in Greenville.

She was a member of the former Mercer Burbank Club and a member of the Mercer Music Club and Mercer County Historical Society, and she also enjoyed playing 500 with her friends from Mercer, Hermitage and Sharon.

She was currently involved with the Brandy Springers. In the 1940s she was involved with the USO.

She loved to go to Countryside Convalescent Home to play the piano for over 40 years. A hall (Redic Hall) and the dining room were named for her for her many years of service.

Helen and her husband Pete were active in Bethany Presbyterian Church and Sunday school. They were members of Mount Pleasant Grange, Pomona, state and national granges. She was a current member of Jackson Grange and a pianist for Grange programs.

She was honored as a 50-year Mercer County voter and retired recently as judge of elections of E. Lackawannock Township after 10 years.

Helen loved working out of doors, planting flowers and spring bulbs. She always looked forward to early spring just to see her flowers bloom that she planted.

A 1934 graduate of Mercer High School, she completed a two-year secretarial course at Grove City College. Prior to starting a family she was employed as a secretary at Mercer Area Schools and assisted her parents in the family business, which began in 1919, Nelson’s Flowers, now operated by the third generation of Thompson brothers.

She is survived by four daughters: Kathleen L. Pyle, wife of Chester Pyle, Land O’Lakes, Fla.; Sandra L. Ashbrook, wife of Larry Ashbrook, in Ferris, Texas; Susan M. Burdick, wife of Thomas Burdick, Grove City; Laurie K. Waugaman, wife of Rob Waugaman, Grove City; seven grandchildren, Christine McDuffie and her husband Mac; Jeffry Beckel and his wife Natasha; Melissa Snyder and her husband Ryan; Jill Burdick-Zupanic and her husband Ryan; Jennifer Burdick, Jonathan Burdick and Ryan Waugaman; three great-grandchildren, Cole McDuffie, Karlyn Snyder and Averie Snyder; a sister, Mary Thompson, wife of Joseph Thompson, Mercer.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and five brothers, Charles, Donald, Harold, Robert and John Nelson.

Service: 11 a.m. Wednesday (12-18-13) at the church, with Rev. Rick Vogeley, pastor of Bethany Presbyterian Church, officiating.

Burial: Mount Irwin Cemetery, Venango County.
