Edna M. Walter Montgomery

Hospital retiree was oldest Scotch Hill church member


- — Edna M. Walter Montgomery, 239 Patterson School Road, Grove City, passed away with her family at her side at 10:38 p.m. Saturday (12-14-13) in Orchard Manor Nursing Home, Pine Township after an extended illness. She was 90.

Born Sept. 24, 1923, in Springfield Township, she was a daughter of Paul M. and Della M. Nemo Rodgers.

She attended the former Whitaker Country School in Pine Township.

Edna worked in Grove City for many years as an operating room technician, first at the former Bashline Hospital, Oak Hill and then the United Community Hospital, retiring in 1988.

She was the oldest member of Scotch Hill Presbyterian Church, Grove City, where she had taught Sunday school.

In her early years Edna enjoyed quilting and playing cards.

Her first husband, Clyde O. Walter, whom she married June 10, 1941, preceded her in death Dec. 15, 1993. Her second husband, John W. “Bud” Montgomery, whom she married June 29, 2003, survives at home in Stoneboro.

She is also survived by two daughters, Carol Filer, Fort Smith, Ark.; and Kathy Tharp and her husband Fred, Howard, Ohio; three sons, C. Robert “Bob” Walter and his wife Ruthanne; and William “Bill” Walter, all Grove City; and Mark D. Walter and his wife Nini, Oxnard, Calif.; two stepchildren, Tom Montgomery and his wife Marlene, Sandy Lake; and Amy Montgomery and her fiance Rob Brienik, Austintown, Ohio; and 13 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents and her first husband, she was preceded in death by an infant son; three sisters, Ella Palmer, Nina Fleming and Dorothy Chamberlain; and four brothers, Bob, Paul, James and Leonard Rodgers.

Calling hours: 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday (12-19-13) in SCOTT A. BLACK FUNERAL HOME, 99 Franklin St., Stoneboro.

Service: Funeral and committal service at 11 a.m. Friday (12-20-13) in the funeral home with Evelyn M. Beebe, CLP, Scotch Hill Presbyterian Church, officiating.

Interment: Crestview Memorial Park, Pine Township.
