George Giroski Jr.

Sharon Steel retiree was devoted husband, father

- — George Giroski Jr., 864 Richmond Drive, Hermitage, formerly of Sharon, passed away peacefully at 11:07 p.m. Saturday (12-21-13) in Allegheny General Hospital, Pittsburgh, following an extended illness. He was 81.

Born July 14, 1932, in Sharon, he and his twin brother John were sons of George and Margret Cheypes Giroski.

A lifelong area resident, he was raised in Farrell and was a member of Farrell High School’s graduating class of 1951.

A decorated veteran of the Korean War, he served with the U.S. Army and was honorably discharged in 1954.

George began working at the former Sharon Steel Corp. prior to the war. He returned home and regained employment at the Farrell plant where he worked for 42 years and retired in October 1992. George also worked as a bricklayer in years past.

He was a member of St. Joseph’s Church, Sharon.

Some of his social memberships included: Veterans of Foreign Wars Hermitage Post 6166, Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks Sharon Lodge 103, Farrell American Legion Post 160, Knights of Columbus Council 684, Sharon, and the fourth degree, Sharon Assembly, and the Carpathian-Russian Club, Sharon.

Along with his wife, George enjoyed volunteering for the American Heart Association’s annual campaigns.

Some of the hobbies he enjoyed in his spare time included crossword puzzles, bowling, playing bocce at Farrell American Legion, and playing cards, especially a good game of poker.

George was a devoted husband and father. His greatest joy was time spent with his family, especially his grandchildren Catherine and Randy. He had a way of making each moment special.

His wife, the former Frances Malak, whom he married Sept. 22, 1956, survives at home. They were devoted to each other for 57 years.

Also surviving are: his two daughters, Karen Cashier, Hermitage; and Laura Shih and her husband Richard, Bedminster, N.J.; his son, David Giroski, Frederick, Md.; his two grandchildren, Catherine and Randy Shih, also Bedminster; his sister Mary Ann O’Hare, Hermitage; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother and sister-in-law, John and Helen Giroski; a sister, Margaret Bavola; and a brother- in-law, Paul O’Hare.

In lieu of flowers, his family suggests that memorial contributions may be made in his memory to St. Joseph’s Church 79 Case Ave., Sharon, PA 16146.

Service: Mass of Christian burial at 10:30 a.m. Friday (12-27-13) in St. Joseph’s Church, 79 Case Ave., Sharon, with the Rev. Glenn R. Whitman, pastor, as celebrant. Military honors will be rendered at the church by the Hickory Veterans of Foreign Wars Honor Guard following the Mass.

Entombment: St. Rose Cemetery, Hermitage.
