Howard H. ‘Doc’ Green

Werner retiree was active in sportsmen’s clubs

- — Howard H. “Doc” Green passed away at his residence at 1:40 a.m. Monday, Dec. 23, 2013 after a year of declining health. He was 83.

He was surrounded by his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and his chocolate lab, Ginger, during his last days.

Howard was born July 3, 1930, the youngest child of Charles E. and Leona Mae Harpst Green in the family home on Werner Road, Sugar Grove Township. He lived within the Osgood and Leech’s Corners area throughout his life.

He attended the Leech’s Corners one-room school and participated in several of the school’s reunions.

Doc was employed by R D. Werner Co. as an extrusion press operator for 30 years, retiring in 1977 following major lung surgery. He enjoyed attending the retirees’ monthly breakfasts and their summer picnics.

He was a great lover of nature and the outdoors.

He built more than 3,000 bluebird boxes that were distributed throughout Pennsylvania and adjoining states as part of the rebuilding of the Eastern bluebird population in the region.

Twice he was recognized by the state of Pennsylvania for his volunteer efforts at M.K. Goddard State Park. Additionally, he raised mealworms for bird food and had bluebirds that would regularly visit his front porch and eat out of his hand.

He was an avid sportsman and had hunted in Pennsylvania, New York, Utah, and Canada. He took numerous trips to Colorado to hunt for elk and mule deer. Many of the deer he harvested were taken with a .44 magnum handgun with open sights.

He was a life member of the National Rifle Association and White Oak Shooting Club, representing them as a delegate to the Mercer County Federation of Sportsmen’s Clubs.

During his time on the board, both the Mercer County Conservation Camp and the Mercer County Youth Field Day were established. For his contribution to the organization, he was awarded the Seth Myers Award for Conservation.

True to his last name, Doc loved to grow and groom his yard and garden. He raised and sold strawberries for many years, and then became interested in organic gardening. His neat garden and bountiful crops were his pride and joy. He shared his produce with family, friends and neighbors.

In addition to the vegetables, he always had a wide variety of colorful flowers decorating his yard. At one time, he would have hundreds of gladiolus plants blooming.

Doc particularly enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, especially if those included a picnic or bowl of homemade ice cream. He loved to attend the sporting events of his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He sat through many wet and freezing hours to cheer on his favorite players and teams.

He was also interested in a good board or card game, and he regularly got together with family and friends to spend an enjoyable afternoon.

On April 28, 1950, he married V. Eleanor Pfaff in Kennard Presbyterian Church. She preceded him in death on March 6, 2010, just eight weeks prior to their 60th wedding anniversary.

Howard is survived by: two daughters, Beverly Riley and her husband, Mike, and Donna Adams, all of Jamestown; three sons, Ronald W. Green and his wife Kathleen, Gerald I. Green and his wife Angela, and Glenn E. Green and his wife Carey, all of Greenville; nine grandchildren, Patrick Riley, Dr. Andrew Adams, Amber Adams, Petty Officer 1st Class Theodore Green, Dennis Green, Sierra Green, Jenna Green, Becky Green and Robert Green; and 11 great-grandchildren.

He also is survived by a brother, Lloyd Green and his wife Barbara, of both Meadville and Florida.

In addition to his wife, Eleanor, he was preceded in death by two brothers, LeRoy Green and Charles W. Green, as well as a sister, Edythe Kirst.

Memorial contributions can be made to: White Oak Shooting Club (Junior Rifle Club), 26 Amasa Road, Greenville, PA 16125.
