James Andrew Tidd

Navy vet, outdoorsman, taught Sunday school

- — James Andrew Tidd of Grove City passed away at 6:30 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 21, 2013, in the hospice unit of the Erie Veterans Affairs Medical Center. Mr. Tidd had Parkinson’s disease. He was 71.

Jim was born June 27, 1942, in Franklin, a son of the late Samuel H. and Freda V. Hurd Tidd.

He graduated from Franklin High School in 1960 and from Robert Morris College in 1970.

He married Bonnie L. Phipps on July 17, 1970, in Pleasantview Methodist Church, Wesley.

Jim served his country in the Navy during the Vietnam War.

He was an active member and elder of North Liberty Presbyterian Church in Grove City, where he was a former treasurer, clerk of session and Sunday school teacher.  

Jim was a, avid outdoorsmen who loved to hunt and fish. A member of  Grove City Sportsmen’s Club, he was a past president and former treasurer.  

He was the former treasurer of Mercer County Federation of Sportsmen  and past coordinator of Mercer County Youth Field Day.

Jim was a hunter education instructor and a member of the National Rifle Association.

He loved to spend time with his grandchildren and his family.

Jim retired from National City Bank in 1998 as assistant manager.

Surviving are: his wife, the former Bonnie L. Phipps of Grove City; a daughter, Brenda E. Martin and her husband William R., Erie; a son, Jeremy B. Tidd and his wife Bobbiejo, Pearl, Venango County; a daughter-in-law, Catherine M. Tidd, Parker, Colo.; his grandchildren, Amanda Petroff of Erie; Leslie and Arthur Newburn of Pearl; and Haley, Michael and Sarah Tidd of Parker.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two sons Jeffery W. Tidd, who passed away July 6, 1974, and Bradley D. Tidd, who passed away July 18, 2007; and a brother Lauren “Larry” Tidd.

Calling hours: 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday (12-27-13) in LARRY E. McKINLEY FUNERAL HOME, 109 Emlenton St., Clintonville..

Service: 1 p.m. Saturday (12-28-13) in North Liberty Presbyterian Church, 209 N. Liberty-Plain Grove Road, Grove City, with an hour of visitation prior to the service. The Rev. Jerry Mahaffey and the Rev. Willard Morse will officiate.

Interment: Clintonville Methodist Cemetery with full military honors by Franklin V.E.T.S.
