Samuel C. Slater

Damascus Tube retiree was church elder

- — Sam was born in New Vernon Township on Feb. 23, 1934, a son of the late Clarence F. and Helen H. Wheeler Slater. 

He was a 1952 graduate of the former Sandy Lake High School. He then went onto enlist and serve proudly with the U.S. Air Force during the Korean conflict. 

On Aug. 22, 1958, he married the former Wanda L. Redfoot who preceded him in death on March 17, 1996. 

He had been employed at the former Cooper-Bessemer, Grove City, and then at the Damascus Tube, Reynolds, from which he retired in 1996.

He was a member and elder of Emmanuel Christian Church, Stoneboro.

Sam was a member of the Sandy Lake Independent Order of Odd Fellows Lodge, a lifetime member of Reynolds VFW Post 7599 and a member of the National Rifle Association. 

He had served as an elected supervisor for New Vernon Township.

Following his retirement he volunteered as a Red Coat at UPMC Horizon, Greenville. 

He enjoyed gardening, farming and taking care of animals and always enjoyed the moments he could share with his children and grandchildren.

 He is survived by: two sons, James Slater and his wife Shari, Sandy Lake; and Nelson Slater and his companion Tammy Strouss, Jackson Center; two daughters, Tammy Westlake, Sandy Lake; and Roxanna Knauff and her husband Ken, Stoneboro; six grandchildren; and two sisters, Ethel Shook and her husband Rodney, and Sarah McFetridge and her husband Robert, of Polk.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife and an infant son, Samuel C. Slater Jr.

Service: Funeral at 11 a.m. Saturday in the funeral home with the Rev. Timothy Clark, pastor of the Emmanuel Christian Church, Stoneboro, officiating.
