Funeral service will be Monday for Alva C. “Dutch” Baker, 97 Donation Road, Hempfield Township, who passed away Thursday afternoon, Dec. 26, 2013, in UPMC Horizon, Greenville. He was 82.
He was born in Greenville Feb. 13, 1931, to Alva K. and Mildred Uber Baker.
Mr. Baker was a 1948 graduate of the former Penn High School, Greenville, and a 1953 graduate of Thiel College, Greenville, with a bachelor of science degree in chemistry.
He was employed for more than 40 years as a materials engineer at the former Sharon Transformer Division of Westinghouse Electric Corp.
An active member of St. John’s Lutheran Church, Greenville, he had served as a deacon and chairman of the building committee and was a member of church council.
He also served on the property and finance committee of the Western Pennsylvania Lutheran Synod and on the boards of directors of both the Lutheran Home at Kane and Thrivent Financial for Lutherans.
An active member of his community, Mr. Baker was a member and past president of Greenville Area School Board, served on the Hempfield Township Planning and Zoning Commission, was chairman of the building committee of Hempfield Township Volunteer Fire Department’s Station One, was a past board member of Boy Scout Troop 51, served on the Northwestern Democratic Committee, and volunteered at the Good Shepherd Center in Greenville and with the Tax-Aide program for AARP.
He was a longtime supporter and follower of both Greenville High School and Thiel College athletics. In addition, he was an avid fan of the Pittsburgh Steelers, Penguins, and Pirates, as well as Pitt and West Virginia University teams.
His other interests included reading, traveling, flower gardening, and working out five days a week at the UPMC Horizon Wellness Center in Hempfield Township.
He married the former Barbara J. Reash on Feb. 22, 1952; she survives at home.
Also surviving are: his two children, Dr. Daniel L. Baker and his wife Kim, Sharpsville; and Lisa A. Baker, Morgantown, W.Va.; four grandchildren, Greg Baker and his wife Maggie, Pittsburgh; Sarah Keaton and her husband Curt, Haymarket, Va.; and Adrianna and Tyler Jarr, both Morgantown.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and a sister, Millie Brown.

Service: Funeral at 11 a.m. Monday (12-30-13) in St. John’s Lutheran Church, Greenville-Mercer Road, Delaware Township, with the Rev. Paul Camp, interim pastor, officiating. Friends and family are invited to a luncheon in the church social hall afterward.
Burial: Shenango Valley Cemetery, Greenville.
