J.C. Gardner

WE retiree, Mason, league bowler served in church

- — J.C. Gardner of Hermitage passed away at 2:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 27, 2013, in UPMC Presbyterian, Pittsburgh, after an illness. He was 89 years old.

Mr. Gardner was born Jan. 28, 1924, in Pharr, Texas, to his parents, John W. Gardner and Lillie R. McCollum Gardner.

After high school, Mr. Gardner continued his education and earned a bachelor of science degree in electrical engineering from Texas Tech University in Lubbock.

In 1942, Mr. Gardner joined the Coast Guard and served in the South Pacific during World War II with a special unit checking newly-erected LORAN stations, which were the forerunner of modern-day electronic navigation.

On May 22, 1943, he married his wife, Esther Wise Gardner, with whom this year he celebrated 70 years of marriage. Mrs. Gardner survives at home.

Mr. Gardner worked for Westinghouse Corp. in various locations before moving to Sharon, including Houston and St. Louis. He retired from the former Sharon Transformer Division of Westinghouse Electric Corp. as a manager of market planning after 32è years of service.

Mr. Gardner was very active in his community as well. He was a member of Free and Accepted Masons Shenango Valley Lodge 810 for more than 60 years and achieved the 32nd degree in Scottish Rite’s Bodies, New Castle Consistory.

But most strong was his faith. He was one of the founding members of Hickory United Methodist Church, Hermitage, where he served as a Sunday school teacher for youth of all ages and also for adults. It wasn’t unusual for the pastor to ask Mr. Gardner to take the pulpit on Sundays if the minister had to leave town.

Until a few months ago, Mr. Gardner was active in various bowling leagues at Ten Pin Alley, Hermitage; and Sunset Lanes, Farrell. In 2011, he was the Senior Games champion.

Mr. Gardner is survived by his wife, at home; two daughters, Sharon Godfrey, Meadville; and Jean Sample and her husband Harry, Mercer; four grandchildren, Brent Godfrey and Drew Godfrey, both Florida; Jason Sample, Stoneboro; and Jeremy Sample, Nicholson, Pa.; and four great-grandchildren, Brayden, Riley, Jayden and Raegan Sample.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Jack Gardner.

J.C., 89, Hermitage.

Service: Memorial service at 11 a.m. Saturday (1-4-14) in Hickory United Methodist Church, 240 N. Hermitage Road, Hermitage, with the Rev. David S. Evans, pastor, officiating.
