Paul LaVerne Book

Ex-company executive was contractor, active in church


- — YOUNGSTOWN – Paul LaVerne Book of the Boyers/West Sunbury area, went home to be with the Lord at noon Friday, Jan. 3, 2014, in St. Elizabeth’s Health Center in Youngstown, following a fall and an unsuccessful recovery throughout the past 17 days. He was 83.

Mr. Book was born Oct. 20, 1930, in Worth Township, Butler County, and attended Slippery Rock High School.

Paul worked on the family farm and started driving the milk truck at an early age.

He married Dorothy Carrara, with whom he had three children. Paul served for years as vice president of McGowan Lumber Co. in Slippery Rock. In more recent years, he worked as an independent contractor.

Paul was a member and elder at West Unity Community Church in Harrisville. He was very active in all church activities and services and served the Lord faithfully there for more than 25 years.

Paul was an avid hunter and outdoorsman.

As a man of few words with an excellent spirit, he was loved by all and will be dearly missed.

Paul is survived by: his wife, Ada Lorraine Smith Book; three children, Paula Verne Book Good and her husband Terry, Portersville; Martin J. Book and his wife Ruth, Springfield, Ohio; and Mitchell F. Book and his wife Brenda, Winona Lake, Ind.; and three stepsons, R. Stanley Smith and his wife Carolyn, Polk; Kenneth L. Smith and his wife Penny, Cranberry; and Boyd D. Smith and his wife Cindy, Harrisville.

He leaves his grandchildren, Kerry and her husband Nathan Miller, Portersville; Ryan Good and his wife Adria, Slippery Rock; Timothy Good, Portersville; Heather Book, Springfield, Ohio; Holly and her husband Shelby Mershon, South Charleston, Ohio; and Mikayla Book, North Carolina; great-grandchildren, Benjamin, Matthew, Daniel and Jesse Miller; Tyler, Luke, Hannah and Jacob Good; Alexis and Alyssa Good; and Haley Lewis, Giovani and Aubriana Mershon; 12 stepgrandchildren and 10 stepgreat-grandchildren; and a sister, Grace Sharrar and her husband Fred, Evans City, Butler County.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Floyd W. and Alice Myers Book, Worth Township; brothers, C. Robert Book, Harlansburg, Lawrence County; Harold “Hap” Book, Harlansburg; William Book, Fort Myers, Fla.; sister, June Wimer, Portersville; his first wife, Dorothy Carrara Book, Slippery Rock; and a stepgrandson, Daniel Smith.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to West Unity Community Church, 400 Unity Road, Harrisville, PA 16038.

Interment: Will follow at Green Lawn Cemetery, Mount Chestnut, Butler County.
