Paul M. Chlpka

Lifelong area resident was Patagonia VFD fire chief

- — Paul was born Aug. 15, 1945, in Sharon, one of three sons born to John and Helen E. Noga Chlpka.

He was a lifelong area resident and a member of Hickory High School’s class of 1963.

A decorated war veteran, he served with the Army from September 1965 until his September 1967. His tour of duty took him to Vietnam, where he served as a Medic (DOC) on the front lines in Vietnam with the 1st Calvary, Company A, Second Battalion. Paul was honorably discharged and awarded the Bronze Star with Valor, and the Air Medal for his meritorious achievement.

He was a member of the Reynolds Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7599.

Paul was employed for 16 years as a truck driver for McLean Trucking Co. and worked out of its West Middlesex terminal. He later worked for 13 years at the Mercer County Emergency 9-1-1 Dispatch Center, Mercer.

A volunteer fireman, Paul served as fire chief for 25 years at the Patagonia Volunteer Fire Department, the second of three stations located in Hermitage.

He was a former member Sts. Peter & Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church, Sharon.

An outdoorsman, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, boating, and simply spending time with his family, especially his four grandchildren who he loved dearly.

He is survived by: his wife Sandra Groscost “Sandy” Chlpka, at home; his two sons, Dr. Paul M. Chlpka Jr. and his wife Angelina, Shenango Township, and Matthew Chlpka and his wife Jamie, Hermitage; four grandchildren, Alex, Andy, and Lydia Chlpka, and Sam Chlpka; his two brothers, John A. Chlpka and his wife Shirley, Hermitage, and Joseph Chlpka and his wife Beverly, Delaware Township.

His parents preceded him in death.

Paul, 68, Crestview Drive, Pymatuning Township.

Calling hours: 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday (1-7-14) and 10:30 a.m. until the time of service Wednesday (1-8-14) in the J. BRADLEY MCGONIGLE FUNERAL HOME AND CREMATORY INC., 1090 E. State St., Sharon.

Service: Funeral service at 11 a.m. Wednesday (1-8-14) in the funeral home with the Rev. Jeffery Harter, pastor of Sts. Peter and Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church, Sharon, officiating.

Interment: West Side Cemetery, Sharpsville, with full military honors provided by the Reynolds Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7599 honor guard.
