Allen Williams

Sharon Steel employee built many local buildings

- — Allen attended school in Cheraw, picked cotton and worked on his grandfather’s farm. He later learned the masonry trade from his grandfather, Henry Singleton, who was the first black contractor in Cheraw, S.C.

Allen came to Farrell, in 1950, was employed at the Malleable plant for a few years. Then he got hired at the Sharon Steel Corp. where he worked for 38 years mostly in the blast furnace department.

Allen then met and married the love of his life, Shirley A. Matthews, for 54 years. To this union were born four children: Allen Douglas, Gina Lorraine, Sherry Louise and Matthew McKinney.

Allen later retired in 1992. He continued doing masonry work till his passing at the age of 82. He has done many jobs for family and friends as far as Richmond, Va., Corning, N.Y. and local places that he helped build are the Radisson, Burger King on Buhl Farm Drive, Cedar Avenue Church of God, Mount Olive Baptist Church in Masury and churches in Youngstown and many private homes. He did most of the masonry work on his own home. Outside of work he was a member/director of Shenago Valley Services, Inc.

Allen acquired the nickname “Smiley” because he always wore a smile on his face. He was the “host with the most”, who always made sure that everyone enjoyed themselves, which then enhanced the party. He enjoyed fishing, traveling, gardening and going to the flea market.

Allen departed this life on Jan. 2, 2014, after a brief illness in O’Brien Nursing Home, Masury. He was preceded in death by his parents and four brothers: Robert Lee, Clyde, Frank and Jerome.

Allen leaves to cherish his memory, his wife, Shirley Ann; two sons, Allen Douglas (Cheryl), Matthew McKinney (Toinina), Chesterfield, Va.; and two daughters, Gina Loraine Green, Atlanta, Ga. and Sherry Louise Venable (Troy) of Columbus, Ohio; two brothers, Woodrow Williams, Baltimore, Md. and Douglas Williams, Hubbard; one sister, Joanne Julye, Brooklyn, N.Y.; two brothers-in-law, James Dixon, Gary, Ind. and Walter (Jeep) Matthews, Farrell; five sisters-in-law, Johnsie Williams Vass, North Carolina, Betty Matthews, Columbus, Ohio, Laureta Matthews, Ettrick, Va., Faythe Matthews, Pittsburgh and Jeanette Matthews, Washington D.C.; 12 grandchildren, six great-grandchildren; extended family, Donald Chambers (Sherry), Wendy Amos, Anita Webb; and a host of loving aunts, nieces, nephews, cousins, and many other family and friends.
