Dr. Matilda Jane Morris, D.O.

Shenango Valley OB/GYN was Woman of the Year


MEADVILLE — Dr. Matilda Jane Morris, D.O., Wesbury United Methodist Retirement Community, Meadville, formerly of Hermitage, went home to be with the Lord at 9:15 a.m. Friday (1-10-14) in Wesbury. She was 92.

Dr. Morris was born April 20, 1921, in New Castle to George D. Morris and Mary Ethel Wilson Morris.

She retired after more than 60 years in the Shenango Valley as an OB/GYN.

Dr. Morris was a 1939 alumna of New Castle High School and graduated from Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine and Muskingum College of Medicine, New Concord, Ohio.

She was a woman of strong faith in both her personal and professional life and served in medical missions in both Bolivia and Peru.

A member of First United Methodist Church of Sharon, Dr. Morris sang in the choir.

She belonged to the Pennsylvania Osteopathic Medical Association and was the 1973 Woman of the Year in Sharon for the American Business Women’s Association.

She traveled extensively throughout the world and in the United States.

Surviving are: three nieces, Laurel Hunt, Midland, Texas; Claudia Gray, Grove City; and Melinda Holfelder, New Wilmington; great-nieces, Annie Laurie Holfelder, New Wilmington; and Sarah Wildes, Midland; great-nephew, Joshua Hunt, Chicago; and three great-great-nieces and -nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, John W. Morris.

Calling hours: 4 to 7 p.m. Monday (1-13-14) in SMITH FUNERAL HOME, 310 W. Neshannock Ave., New Wilmington.

Service: Funeral service at 11 a.m. Tuesday (1-14-14) in the funeral home with the Rev. William H. Stone Jr., pastor of Neshannock Presbyterian Church, New Wilmington, officiating.

Interment: Oak Park Cemetery, New Castle.
