Michelle D. Pelino

Sharon native was dedicated art teacher

---- — NEW WATERFORD, Ohio – Heaven became a much livelier place on Sunday (3-24-13) as it welcomed its newest resident, Michelle D. Pelino, of New Waterford. Michelle passed away after a brief but spirited battle against cancer, surrounding by her loving family. She was 51.

She was born June 15, 1961, in Sharon, a daughter of Richard and Darlene Chiodo Malandro. She graduated from Sharon High School in 1979 and from Youngstown State University with a bachelor’s degree in education. She received her master’s degree from Mary Grove College in Detroit, Mich.

A talented art teacher for many years, first for the Youngstown city schools and most recently for Crestview Local schools, Michelle inspired her students to create and be unique individuals. Her students will always remember her passion for art (Andy Warhol in particular) and her legendary field trips. She was fearless in her desire for her students to broaden their horizons by experiencing a wide variety of art and culture.

Some of Michelle’s most memorable field trips included sleeping overnight at the Carnegie Museum of Natural History in Pittsburgh, seeing the works of Salvador Dali at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and viewing the Pablo Picasso exhibit at the Art Gallery of Ontario. She also took her students to New York City, Chicago and Cleveland where they were exposed to the works of many other famous artists, including Vincent Van Gogh and Georgia O’Keeffe.

Michelle had a passion for life and loved to travel with her husband, Frank, and their beloved sons, Nicholas and Dante. She was an avid Steeler fan.

Michelle was blessed with the ability to bring happiness and a smile to the faces of everyone she met. Her many loyal friends and co-workers will always remember her infectious smile, her positive attitude and her kind, yet mischievous, nature.

She and her family worshipped at Saint Charles Catholic Church. Michelle was also involved with several other special interest groups, including the National Education Association, the Ohio Education Association and the Ohio Art Education Association.

Surviving are her husband, Frank A. Pelino, whom she married Aug. 20, 1994, and her sons, Nicholas and Dante. Her sister, Shelia Biblis, resides in Hermitage.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Services: A prayer service at 9:15 a.m. Wednesday (3-27-13) at the funeral home, followed by a Mass of Christian burial at 10 a.m. at Saint Charles Catholic Church.
