Frank J. Nettinger

Tube plant retiree was Good Shepherd member

- — Frank J. Nettinger, Hermitage, passed away peacefully at 4:11 a.m. Monday, April 7, 2014, in his residence with his family at his side. He was 89.

Frank was born June 18, 1924, in West Middlesex, one of 11 children of Frank and Rose Hiegel Nettinger.

A lifelong area resident, he was a member of the class of 1942 of Hickory High School, Hermitage.

A decorated veteran, he entered the Army Air Force in May 1943 and was honorably discharged in April of 1946 with several medals and commendations. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

He retired in 1985 with 39 years of service from Wheatland Tube Co., where he worked in several capacities.

Mr. Nettinger was a charter member and a former member of the parish council at Church of the Good Shepherd, West Middlesex, where he also belonged to the Men’s Club and the church funeral dinner crew, and served as an usher in years past.

He loved reading, working puzzles, fishing, woodworking and watching old westerns and his beloved Pittsburgh Pirates and Steelers. He also knew his way around the dance floor.  

His first wife, the former Anne Butchko, whom he married June 29, 1946, passed away in April 1973.

Surviving are: his second wife, the former Elizabeth “Betty” Gassner Baker, whom he married Nov. 23, 1978; two daughters, Kathy Struck and her husband William C., Sharon; and Carol Campbell, Conneaut Lake; five sons, David F. Nettinger, Wailuku, Hawaii; Charles T. Baker and his wife Carol, Hermitage; Michael J. Baker and his wife Chris, Akron; Lawrence R. Baker and his wife Becky, Transfer; and Joseph E. Baker and his wife Carol, Hermitage; a sister, Catherine Robison, New Castle; a brother, Fred A. Nettinger, Hermitage; and 12 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents and his first wife, he was preceded in death by a grandson, Stefan A. Tarapchak; six sisters, Barbara Mirage, Theresa “Toots” Young, Eva Parshall, Elsie Cory, Mary Lou Swingle and an infant Kathryn Nettinger; and two infant brothers, William and Edward Nettinger.

Services: Mass of Christian burial at 10:30 a.m. Thursday (4-10-14) in Church of the Good Shepherd, 3613 Sharon Road, West Middlesex, with the Rev. Robert M. Malene, church pastor, and Monsignor Salvatore P. Mitchell, former pastor, concelebrating. The family asks that everyone go directly to the church. Full military honors will be rendered at the church following the Mass by the honor guard of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6233, West Middlesex; and American Legion Post 432, Wheatland.

Interment: St. Rose Cemetery, Hermitage.
