Mary M. Bernard of 2002 Madison St., Farrell, passed from this life at 8 p.m. Sunday (8-25-13) in UPMC Hamot Medical Center, Erie, after a brief illness. She was 94.
Known as “Mrs. B.” to her neighbors and friends, Mrs. Bernard was born April 10, 1919, in Humphreys, Westmoreland County, to Joseph and Katherine Pavlik Kmetz.
On Feb. 3, 1937, she married John W. Bernard, who preceded her in death May 8, 1966.
Mary was a longtime member of the former St. Ann’s Church in Farrell and a current member of Church of Notre Dame in Hermitage.
She was a homemaker and an excellent cook and baker. Her hobbies included collecting angel figurines and Christmas pins and flower gardening. She enjoyed playing bingo and traveling to casinos.
An avid sports fan, she rooted for the Pittsburgh Steelers, Pirates and Penguins, and for Notre Dame football, Duke University basketball and Farrell High School football and basketball.
Mary was a kind and loving mother and will be remembered for her cheerful smile and generous nature to her friends. Her favorite expression was “Heaven is the real world; I’ll see you there.”
Mary is survived by: her two sons, John and William Bernard, both Farrell, and several nieces and nephews.
Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; four sisters, Antoinette Nalevanko, Cecelia Bulebosh, Dorothy Wojciechowski and Catherine Kmetz; and six brothers, Mathias, Joseph, John, Peter, Paul and Frank Kmetz.
Mary’s family would like to thank the staffs of UPMC Horizon, Farrell, and UPMC Hamot, Erie, for their kindness to Mary during her recent illness.
