Eugene J. Montone

Retired Army officer was CYS director, raced horses


---- — ROCKLEDGE, Fla. – Eugene J. Montone of 7206 Mandel Way, Viera, FL 32940, formerly of Mercer County, passed away early Tuesday morning, Aug. 27, 2013, in Wuesthoff Medical Center, Rockledge. He was 78.

Mr. Montone was born Jan. 23, 1935, in Philadelphia to James and Antoinette Zarro Montone.

He was an alumnus of Southern Illinois University, Carbondale; and Louisville (Ky.) University.

Having dedicated his professional life to helping children, Mr. Montone served as the director of Children and Youth Services in Mercer County for more than 20 years.

He was a retired lieutenant colonel in the Army.

Eugene’s hobby was owning, training and racing standardbred horses.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years,  Joan Montone, whom he married June 16, at home in Florida. He also leaves his son, Joseph Montone, Sharpsville; his granddaughter, Nicole Montone and her fiancé Justin Krasa, both West Middlesex; his great-granddaughter, Breelynn McCormick, also West Middlesex; and his granddaughter, Emily Montone, Sharpsville.
