Robert ‘Bob’ L. Pegues Sr.

Mercer County Hall of Famer was church deacon

---- — A funeral service will be held Monday for Robert “Bob” L. Pegues Sr. of 1350 Charles St. in Hermitage. He passed away Tuesday evening (8-6-13) in Cleveland Clinic. He was 80.

Mr. Pegues was born April 27, 1933, in Cheraw, S.C., to Hood and Dora Grace Pegues.

A 1952 graduate of Farrell High School, from 1949 to 1951 he helped lead the Night Riders to a WPIAL Class AAAA Championship in 1951. As a three-year starter, in his senior year he was named All-WPIAL and was honorary team captain, earning a reputation as one of the top football players produced at the school. Robert also lettered in track and wrestling as a member of its last mat team in 1950.

After earning a scholarship at Penn State University, he was a one year starter with the Nittany Lions, playing with greats including Lenny Moore, Rosey Greer and Charley Blockson and was recognized for starting the college’s weight-training program.

He went on to play pro football as a defensive and offensive tackle with the Canadian League’s Hamilton Tiger Cats and played football in the U.S. Army.

Subsequently, Bob was a weightlifting instructor at the F.H. Buhl Club, Sharon, and served on the boards of United Way and Martin Luther King Center, Farrell.

By profession, Mr. Pegues was a compliance officer for Mercer and Crawford counties for PennDOT, and at one time worked for General Motors’ Lordstown (Ohio) car assembly plant. He formerly operated a service station at Budd and Dock streets in Sharon and repaired cars in Farrell and Sharon.

A member of Greater Mount Zion Church of God in Christ, Farrell, Mr. Pegues served on the deacon board, the church’s executive board and finance committee and was a Sunday school teacher.

He served on a committee in which Farrell High School renamed a drive and erected a stone monument at its gymnasium door in honor of Julius McCoy. That committee also spearheaded the planting of trees now standing on Roemer Boulevard in Farrell in appreciation of McCoy.

For many of his athletic achievements, Bob was celebrated Feb. 20, 2011, by Community Missionary Baptist Church, Farrell, with its 28th Annual Achievement Award in honor of Black History Month.

In 2011, he was inducted into Mercer County Hall of Fame.

His wife, the former Charlotte Williams, whom he married Oct. 15, 1955, survives at home.

Also surviving are: a son, Robert L. Pegues Jr. and his wife Tammy J., McKinney, Texas; a sister, Bertha Robinson, Farrell; a grandson, Robert L. Pegues III; and a stepgrandson, Ulysses Preston.

Bob was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters, Julia Adams, Buelah Campbell and Mamie Fletcher; and two brothers, James Pegues and Daniel Pegues Sr.
