Mary ‘Margaret’ Moore

Meals on Wheels, church helper was school director

- — Mrs. Moore was born Sept. 7, 1926, in Sharpsville to Roy Leo Brown and Margaret Cottrell Brown.

She graduated from Sharon High School in 1944 and continued her education at Carnegie Institute of Technology, where she earned a bachelor’s of science in chemistry.

She worked for the former Sharon Transformer Division of Westinghouse Electric Corp. as a chemist. She was also a homemaker and co-owner and operator of Moore’s Christmas Tree Farm, Hermitage, with her husband, Curtis L. Moore. They married Sept. 16, 1950; he passed away Oct. 12, 2004.

Margaret was an active member of Church of Christ, Hermitage, where she was a Sunday school teacher, belonged to the ladies group that sewed stuffed bears and blankets for hospital patients, and belonged to the Sojourners, a volunteer group that traveled around the country helping others.

She enjoyed sewing, reading, snow skiing and traveling, including traveling with her daughter Martha to see all the covered bridges in the country. She began visiting lighthouses before she became ill.

Margaret was a former school board member for Hermitage School District and obtained her private pilot license at age 65. She also prepared and delivered for Meals on Wheels and belonged to numerous clubs.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by a stepmother, Mildred Dunn Brown; and a brother, James Brown.

She is survived by three daughters, Karen Applegate and her husband Lindall, New Castle; Kathryn Childress and her husband Jim, Afton, Va.; and Dr. Martha Moore, Sandy Lake; a son, Thomas Moore and his wife Kathy, Canton, Texas; a sister, Martha Brown Sulik, Boardman; two brothers, Ray Brown and David Brown, both of California; six grandchildren, Kari Wheeler, Jonathan Applegate, Karla Rodkey, Kristin Childress, Abby Henderson and Katy Moore; three great-grandchildren, Madison and Morgan Wheeler and Hannah Rodkey; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Burial: Cremation followed by burial in Hillcrest Memorial Park, Hermitage.
